Nathaniel Sparhawk, the emigrant ancestor of all bearing that name in the United States, settled in Cam- bridge, Massachusetts, in 1638.^ This is the generally accepted date, although Mr. Paige gives, in his History of Cambridge, 1636. The birthplace of Nathaniel Spar- hiiwk was in Dedham, Essex Co., Enghind, and his par- ents were Lewis and Elizal)eth (Bayning) Sparhawk. At the time of bis coming to New England, he was in the fortieth year of his age. He was made freemau. May 23, 1639, aud a deacon of the (;hnrch of Cambridge. Three years Liter he was deputy to the General Court, from 1642 to 1647. In May, 1645, he was one of "a committee to consider of some way whereby y* negative vote may be tempered, y* justice may have free passage."
From various sources we learn that he was a man of large property, most of which was in real estate within or

near Cambridge.^ His residence was on the easterly side of Brighton street, between Mount Auburn street and Harvard square. In 1642, he is represented as owning five houses and about five hundred acres of land.
By his wife Mary (whose maiden name is unknown), he had five or more children. Of these, the eldest, Na- thaniel, was born in England, and probably all but the youngest.^ The following is the list of his children in the probable order of their birth.

Nathaniel Sparhawk, sr., died June 28, 1647, and his wife, Mrs. Katherine Sparhawk, July 5 of the same yea'r.
At the time of Nathaniel Spnrhawk's death, we are told by Paige, in his History of Cambridge, that about a thou- sand acres were sold from the estate and that there was still remaining "a large quantity of land on the south side of the river (now Brighton district), a part of which still remains in possession of his descendants." This shows a large increase in his real estate during the last five years of his life.

Nathaniel Sparhawk, the father, died in January, 1687. He had been a resident of Brighton district ; was select- man from 1677 to 1686, and a deacon of the church, as was his father before him. His will was dated Dec. 29, 1686, and an inventory of his estate was presented to the court, Jan. 20, 1686-7.
2 Anne Sparhawk married Deacon John Cooper, "who undoubtedly came from Dedham, England," says Mr. Ap- pleton in his sketch of" the family of Nathaniel Sparhawk," published first in " The New England Historical and Gen- ealogical Register " for April, 1865, and afterward in pamphlet form.

Deacon John Cooper, the father of these children, re- sided on the easterly side of North Avenue, in Cambridge, not far from Linnean street, and was a prominent citizen. For thirty-eight years he was one of the selectmen (1646- 1684), and town clerk thirteen years (166i>-81). He was also deacon of the church until his death which occurred Aug. 22, 1691, in the 73d year of his age. His widow Mrs. Anne (Sparhawk) Cooper married James Convers, sr., of Woburn, and was living as late as 1712.

Nathaniel Sparhawk was selectman from 1716 to 1730, was elected deacon Aug. 5, 1724, and died Nov, 8, 1734. Mrs. Abigail (Gates) Sparhawk afterward married Joseph Mayo, Oct. 16, 1735, and attained extreme old age.

Rev. John Sparhawk graduated at Harvard College in 1689, being the first of the family to attend college. He was the second pastor over the First Church in Bristol, Rhode Island, whose house of worship was erected in 1687- (It was rebuilt in 1770, and the present edifice erected in 1857.) On Oct. 2, 1695, Rev. John Sparhawk, after a year's probation, was installed as pastor of the church. He married two or three times. ^ The names of two of his wives are known; Miss Elizabeth Poole, and Miss Priscilla Hemans.^ The last is supposed to have been the mother of his sons John and Nathaniel. His first wife probably died childless. He died April 29, 1718, in the 46th year of his age "greatly loved and respected by all his people, and his death was lamented for many years." His widow married Jonathan Waldo, Esq., a wealthy merchant of Boston, who educated her two sons at his own expense.

27 Sybil Avery, daughter of Dr. Jonathan and Sybil (Sparhawk) Avery, married Hon. Thomas Graves of Charlestown, Mass., Sept 9, 1708. They had seven chil- dren ; but of the five who are known to have died in infancy the names are unknown. The remaining two who follow were :

Hon. Thomas Graves was born June 28, 1683. Grad- uated at Harvard College in 1703. He was a physician and judge of the Supreme Court of Massachusetts. He died June 19, 1747. Mrs. Sybil (Avery) Graves died Nov. 1, 1721, of small-pox. Her husband was married twice after the death of this first wife. His second wife was Ann, widow of Edward Watts of Chelsea, and she died March 13, 1738, aged 49. His last wife was Phoebe, the widow of Leonard Vassall, Esq., of Boston, and a daughter of Sam- uel and Mary (Cutis) Penhallow of Portsmouth, N. H. Thus she was granddaughter of President John Cutts of that city on the maternal side. She survived her husband but a short time.
30 Rev. Edward Wigglesworth, son of Rev. Mi- chael and Sybil (Sparhawk) Wigglesworth, married, first, Miss Sarah, the daughter of President John and Margaret (Rogers) Leverett, June 15, 1726. Her father was Presi- dent of Harvard College. She died, Nov. 9, 1727, leaving no children, and he married as his second wife, Rebecca Coolidge, dau. of Joseph and Rebecca (Frost) Coolidge,

Sept. 10, 1729. He was the first Hollis Professor of di- vinity at Harvard College, and graduated from there in 1710. His degree of D.D. was received from Edinburgh in 1730.

Thomas Sparhawk, sr., was selectman in Cambridge, Mass., from 1744 to 1764. He was also a Justice of the Peace, and died Aug. 15, 1783, at which time his wife, Mrs. Mary (Oliver) Sparhawk, was still living.
37 Mr. Joseph Sparhawk, son of Samuel and Sa- rah (Whiting) Sparhawk, married a Miss Cook and after- wards Miss Sibley. His children were :

38 Rev. Nathaniel Sparhawk of Lynnfield, son of Nathaniel and Abigail (Gates) Sparhawk, was ordained at Lynnfield, August, 1720, and a graduate of Harvard College, 1715. He married Mrs. Elizabeth Perkins (pub- lished in Lynn, Mass., March 8, 1719-20). He died May 7, 1732. She died suddenly May 12, 1768, «. 68.

42 Rev. John Sparhawk, jr., son of Rev. John and Priscilla (Hemans) Sparhawk, married Jane Porter, daughter of Rev. Aaron Porter (and his wife Miss Sewall) of Medford, Mass., Oct. 4, 1737. He graduated from Harvard College in 1731, and was ordained Oct., 1736, as pastor of the first church of Salem, Mass. Quoting from his memorandum book now in the possession of Mr. Edward Eppes Sparhawk of Roxbury, Mass., we have the following statement :
" Dec''^ 8, 1736. On this day was the ordination at which time there were convened the following churches ; The Second Church in Salera, the Rev. M^ Clark, Minister ; and the Third Church, the Rev. M"". Prescot, Minister; the Second ch. of Marblehead, the Rev. M"^. Holyoke, Minister ; the Second ch. of Beverly, the Rev. M"^. Chip- man, Minister ; the church of Cambridge, the Rev. M"". Appleton, minister ; and the first church of Reading, Rev. M'. Hobby, Minister. M"". Chipman began with prayer. M^ Appleton preached, — Prov. 11, 30. M'. Holyoke gave the charge and M"^. Prescot the Right Hand of Fel- lowship. The whole service was performed with the greatest order and decency." This quotation is given in an abbreviated form in Brewster's " Rambles about Ports- mouth" Second Series, p. 187.

Rev. John Sparhawk, the father, was pastor of the first church in Salem, Mass., and died, April 30, 1755. Mrs. Jane (Porter) SparhaAvk died July 26, 1777. They were married (according to aforesaid memorandum book) "at Major Se wall's house, at Boston." This was her maternal grandfather, a brother of the famous Chief Justice Samuel Sewall.

Nathaniel Sparhawk, sr., was a merchant in Boston at the time of his marriage, but after that he lived in Kitteiy. (His father-in-law had built there the elegant mansion now known as the "Sparhawk house" for his daughter Madam Sparhawk.) Mr. Sparhawk retained an interest in his business in Boston, and also had commercial interests in Kittery. In his later years he was conspicuous as a Judge and Councillor. The elegant dining hall, in the Sparhawk house, was used as "the Council Chamber," where the Councillors met. This house, now in perfect preservation, is the finest specimen of the architecture of the period (1742) remaining in that vicinity. Of the marriage of Nathaniel Sparhawk and Elizabeth Pepperrell, the Rev. John Sparhawk, in his memorandum book, writes as fol- lows :
"My dear and only brother, Nath'l, was married at Kit- tery to Miss Elizabeth Pepperrell, the only daughter of the then Hon'ble William Pepperrell, Esq., now Sir William Pepperrell, Bart., on June 10, 1742."
Mrs. Elizabeth (Pepperrell) Sparhawk was, through her mother, a great granddaughter of the famous Chief Justice Samuel Sewall, and thus a descendant as Avell of the Dummers, Hirsts, and many more distinguished fami- lies. She carried herself always with a true spirit of no- bility. Her last years were spent with her daughter Mrs. Charles Jarvis, in Boston, at which time she was active in all good words and works. She died in Boston in 1797, leaving only her two oldest sons (Nathaniel and William) and her daughter Mrs. Jarvis ;^ her husband and the others havinsT gone before her.

Mrs. Priscilla (Hemaus) Sparhawk, after the death of her husband, married Jonathan Waldo, and her will is re- corded in the probate office of Alfred, Maine. In it she bequeaths to her son John, "all that wrought plate which he has already received," also to her son Nathaniel "all the plate of which I shall die possessed, or shall not have disposed of and delivered in my life time to those to whom the same may be conveyed." She wills to her daughter- in-law Elizabeth (Pepperrell) Sparhawk her "Suit of Mas- querade Damask," in return or offset for a "suit of silk cloths" given to her daughter-in-law Jane (Porter) Spar- hawk.
They are to have her wearing apparel equally divided between them. Her sons Rev. John Sparhawk of Salem, Mass., and Hon. Nathaniel Sparhawk of Kittery, Maine, to have her estate, real and personal, divided between them. This was dated Kittery, Maine, July 12, 1749, and probated Mar. 31, 1755. It is probable that she was residing with her son Nathaniel.
This is further changed by a codicil in which she gives one hundred pounds old tenor, or the value thereof in other money to her granddaughter Priscilla Sparhawk.

Through his grandmother, Mrs. Sarah (Whiting) Sparhawk, he was also a descend- ant of the Rt. Hon. Sir Oliver St. John of Clayshoe, Kn't, Devonshire, England. His great grandfather. Rev. Jos. Whiting, was a graduate of Harvard College in 1761 and preached forty-three years at Southampton, Long Island,^ where he died. His mother, Mrs. Joanna (Winchester) Sparhawk, died June 26, 1786, more than twelve years after her husband (see 31).

Nathaniel Ropes, sr., was born May 20, 1726. He was an only child ; his parents Avere Nathaniel and Abigail (Pickraan) Ropes, and he was graduated from Harvard Col- lege in 1745. In 1761 he was appointed a Justice of the Court of Common Pleas for Essex County. In 1766 he was Chief Justice, and in 1772 was promoted to the bench of the Superior Court of Judicature. He was also a rep- resentative and a member of the Executive Council, also Ruling Elder of the First Church. He died of small pox in the prime of life. A full account of him is given in Vol. VII of" The Essex Institute Historical Collections," pages 153-154.

Mrs. Catherine (Sparhawk) Sparhawk died in Kittery, Maine, in 1778 ; her children and husband survived her. Of her husband's second and third marriages a full account will be found by referring to number 126. Of the five children by this marriage, Nathaniel the eldest died unmar- ried in Weathersfield, Vermont, at the residence of Hon. Wm. Jarvis. The latter had married his half sister Mary Pepperrell Sparhawk, and offered his brother-in-law a home with him which was accepted. The second, Nathaniel, jr., died in York, Maine, and was interred in the tomb of his

great grandfather Sir Wm. Pepperrell at Kittery, Maine. Eliza Sparhawk married Andrew Spooner, and her descend- ants are the only ones to-day who remain of these five children by her father's first marriage. Her sister. Susan Sparhawk, went abroad and nursed her father through a long illness in London, and died there in 1803. Catharine Spar- hawk, the youngest of the five, married Daniel Humphreys, jr., a son of Daniel and Mary King Humphreys, and mater- nally descended from Richard the brother of President John Cutts, through the Kings and Vaughans. The line of her descendants died out in the first generation.
Nathaniel Sparhawk, sr., was appointed in 1773 to the Council, but declined to serve. ^

120 Susannah Sparhawk, the daughter of Rev. John and Jane (Porter) Sparhawk, married George King At- kinson, May 12, 1771. Her husband's name was origi- nally George King; a brother of Abigail King, who married John Sparhawk. By the provisions of the will of Hon. Theodore Atkinson, he inherited his property upon condition that he assumed the name of Atkinson, which he did. They had no children, and her will which we herewith give, in part, reads as follows :
"I give and bequeath to my nephews Wm. K. Atkinson, John Sparhawk and Thomas Sparhawk, all my public se- curities, monies in the funds, notes of hand, bonds, debts of every kind due to me ; judgements, executions and mort- gages, to be equally divided between them my said neph- ews in equal thirds, share and share alike.
To Daniel Humphreys, Esq., my brother-in-law, one hundred pounds, and my house and land, shop, wharf, etc., at Puddle Dock in Portsmouth.

William Pepperrell Sparhawk became chief heir of his grandfather (Sir William Pepperrell), on condition that at twenty-one years of age he should drop the name Spar- hawk and be known as Sir William Pepperrell.
His grandfather's wishes were respected, and eight years after his grandfather's decease(1767) , he assumed the title. ^ He has been known as Sir William 2(1, and also in the family as "Young Sir William." He graduated from Harvard College in 1766, and was later a Councillor, and Manda- mus Councillor. A royalist, he fled to England with his wife and children, also his wife's parents and kindred in 1775. His wife died on the voyage and was buried at Hali- fax, N. S., October 8th. Her four children were born in Kittery, Maine. Of her character, we can judge somewhat, by a letter written by her brother-in-law, Samuel Hirst Sparhawk to his father, of which we will transcribe a part further on.

" Young Sir William " received a great deal of attention in England, and was painted by West in a large group, which represented him as he was when he presented his brother tories of America to the King, craving the King's most gracious favor. ^ He led a remarkably useful life, was distinguished by a love of patriotism and charity toward all men. He died in 1816, one year after his brother Nathaniel, who had sojourned awhile in England after " young Sir William," became a permanent resident there. The most complete account of his life, which we cannot transcribe in our limited space, is to be found in Sabine's "Loyalists of the American Revolution" to which we have already re- ferred our readers.
129 Andrew Pepperrell Sparhawk, the fifth son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Pepperrell) Sparhawk, mar- ried Miss Turner, the daughter of an army officer in Bos- ton, Sept. 5, 1775. He went to England with his brother William, and died there, without children, in 1783. His portrait, painted by Copley, is in existence in England. It is owned by a lineal descendant of his niece. Lady Palmer, Sir Archdale Palmer of AVanlip Hall, Leicestershire, England.
130 Samuel Hirst Sparhawk, the sixth and young- est son of Nathaniel and Elizabeth (Pepperrell) Sparhawk, went to England sometime later than his brothers William and Andrew and was married thei-e. His portrait by Cop- ley is in the possession of Sir Archdale Palmer.

Before leaving for England, which step was the result of his being an ardent Loyalist, he wrote to his father the following letter, the original of which is now in the posses- sion of the writer.
Hon**, and dear Sir :
I have not til now had an opportunity of writing you for some time past, owing to the communication hetwixt us and the country being cut ojff; and am now obliged to confine myself to a few particulars as letters undergo an inspection of committees, etc., etc.
Since my last you have undoubtedly been made ac- quainted with the melancholy event of Lady Pepperrell's death, which has been a most trying, piercing trouble to us all, but especially to my poor broken hearted brother Sir William who is day and night weeping for his dear departed Object ; and can any one who knew her wonder? Surely no : for she deserved the esteem of every one : her sweetness of disposion and obliging behaviour added to every amiable quality won the regard and attention of all around her, and I must say as far as I have ever been able to discover if there have been any exceptions to this, it nuist have been owing to themselves and not to her ; she often did kindnesses, but she injured no one : she was too harmless and innocent, and I cou'd not love any- body who I tho't didn't love her, but upon the principle enjoined by a perfect character, to "love our enemies." She was a worthy charming woman indeed ! who can think of her and not be distressed. I'm sure I mourn my loss most sincerly and its universal among all who were ac- quainted with her character. I trust she is now made happy in heaven thro' the great atonement for sin by Jesus Christ

They left no children, but Mr. Dana was much engaged in public life. He was colonel of the militia, justice of the peace, selectman seventeen years (1776-1794), rep- resentative from Cambridge fourteen years (1778-1792) and representative from Brighton in 1806 and 1808. His epitaph describes him as "a prudent, pleasant friend, the father, legislator, judge and peacemaker of Brighton, ex- tensively useful and greatly beloved by all who knew him."

Judge John Lowell married Rebecca Russell (who was his third wife) after his removal to Boston. He was a lin- eal descendant of Percival Lowell, who came to America in 1639.^ His father was the Rev. John Lowell, who mar- ried, first, Sarah Champney (Judge Lowell's mother) and second, Mrs. Elizabeth (Cutts) Whipple, the widow of Rev. Jos. Whipple, and daughter of Robert and Dorcas (Hammond) Cutts of Kittery, Maine. Judge Lowell was born in Newbury, June 17, 1743, and took his first degree in Harvard College in 1760. He was admitted to practice law in 1763. He held many distinguished positions and was honored alike by young and old. A very valuable account of his life, and of that of his son Charles, has been written by his granddaughter, Mrs. Mary (Lowell) Put- nam. To this we have already referred, and we will not attempt to do more than advise our readers to read that at their earliest leisure. Judge Lowell died May 6, 1802.

mother was Sarah Tyler, daughter of John Tyler and granddaughter of Thomas and Miriam (Simpkins) Tyler, the ancestors of the Boston family of that name.^ Her father, Rev. Ellis Gray, was son of Edward and Hannah (Ellis) Gray, and colleague pastor of the Second Church in Boston. He was very nearly related to Hon. Harrison Gray Otis, and many other distinguished Bostonians.
217 Reverend Thoraas Gary, the brother of Samuel Gary, was graduated at Harvard College in 1761. He mar- ried May 25, 1775, Esther Carter of Newburyport, Mass., a daughter of Nathaniel and Abigail (Beck) Carter. She died May 28, 1779, and he died Nov. 24, 1808.
Reverend Thomas Gary was married twice and had one son, by his first marriage, who died unmarried in early manhood. His name was Thomas Graves Gary. The name of his second wife we have thus ftir failed to find. His wife Esther was a sister of Mrs. Edward Cutts, of Portsmouth, N. H., and there are, through that source, in the posses- sion of the writer, a number of his printed sermons and a quaint portrait of Rev. Thos. Gary, executed, evidently, by an amateur. Also a mourning ring in memory of Mrs. Esther Gary, died in 1779.

From there he went to a hospital in Philadelphia. His portrait was painted by Stuart.

Rev. Charles Lowell's life has been so graphically pic- tured by his daughter, Mrs. Mary Lowell Putnam, to which we have already referred, that we will not attempt in our brief record to give more than an outline. He was born on August 15, 1782, in Boston, Mass. He received his first education at the grammar school in Roxbury, where his parents were then living. He entered Harvard Col- lege as a member of the sophomore class in 1797, having previously attended Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass. He took his degree on July 16, 1800. He studied law under his brother for one year at the desire of his father.

Finding it distasteful, he was not opposed in his wish tc enter the ministry. He completed his studies in Edin- burgh and travelled extensively in Europe. His wife was a great-great-granddaughter of Robert and Mary (Hoel) Cutts of Kittery, Maine, through her mother. The ac- count of his ministrations as clergyman can only be alluded to here. He was not only successful but well-beloved. All his children who have attained to years of maturity, have achieved distinction, the most notable being: his youngest son James Russell Lowell, the famous poet, lit- terateur, statesman and orator.
On March 30, 1850, Mrs. Harriett B. S. Lowell was suddenly taken away from her family by death. She was much beloved, and it is said that her youngest sou inher- ited his poetical talent from her. Mr. Lowell survived her eleven years, dying on January 10, 1861.

He was educated at Winchester College, with privileges of kin of the founder William of Wykeham, and at Woolwich. His death occurred at Ashford Hall, April 28, 1851.
Mrs. Russell's father, Ollyet Woodhouse, Esq., was bar- rister at law and Judge Advocate Bombay ; a son of Rob- ert Woodhouse of Yadham, Norfolk and of Norwich, who claimed (by descent from the Drurys) the estate of Beas- thrope from the second Lord Byron by the daughter of Alderson Byle, uncle of the late Baron Aldersou. She died at Borenthan Hall, Nov. 14, 1875, aged seventy- four.

Lewis Tappan, son of Benjamin and Sarah (Homes) Tappan, born in Northampton, May 23, 1788, was a grand- son of Rev. Benjamin and Eliza (Marsh) Toppan, and great grandson of Samuel and Abigail (Wigglesworth) Toppan. His famous ancestor, Rev. Michael Wiggles- worth, married Mrs. Sybil (Sparhawk) Avery (see earlier pages). Lewis Tappan was descended from Rev. Michael and Martha (Mudge) Wigglesworth. Rev. Benjamin Tappan first changed the name to Tappan which spelling his descendants all use. Lewis T. was educated at home, and at fifteen found a position with Mr. T. Wiggins, a prominent merchant in Boston, and remained with him until he became of age. He then accepted an ofi'er from Mr. George Searle (nephew of Mr. Stephen Higginson), and they went into business together, under the Hrm name of "Tappan & Searle," India goods. When he mtirried, at the age of twenty-five, he had acquired $80,000. From 1828 until 1841 he was a partner with his brother Arthur Tappan in New York, under the firm name of Arthur Tappan & Co. His brother established "The Journal of Commerce" in 1828, and after a year's trial sold it to

Lewis Tappan, who owned it awhile and sold it again. Lewis Tappan was one of the pioneers of the Anti-Slav- ery movement and an organizer of " The Anti-Slavery So- ciety." His house, No. 40 Kose street, New York, was mobbed July 9, 1834; doors and windows were broken open and the furniture and bedding thrown into the street and burned. The portrait of Dr. William Aspinwall by Gilbert Stuart, because of its resemblance to Washington, was not destroyed. Lewis Tappan was one of the foun ders of "The American Missionary Society" and later be- came its treasurer. When nearly eighty years of age, he wrote a life of his brother Arthur Tappan. He died in Brooklyn, N. Y., June 21, 1873. This was twenty years after the death of his wife which occurred Mar. 24, 1853, in Brooklyn, N. Y.'

John Sparhawk, sr., died May 28, 1889, m Philadel- phia, Pa. The following notice of his life is taken from " The Evening Telegraph" of that city.
The funeral services of the late John Sparhawk were held yesterday at his late residence. No. 3809 Chestnut street, Philadelphia. A very large number of people were in attendance. The services were conducted by Rev. Henry C. McCook, D.D., assisted by Rev. Stephen W. Dana, D.D. The pall-bearers were B. B. Comegys, Lemuel Coffin, Hon. Robert N. Wills(m, Dr. Charles Stewart Wurtz, Gordon Monges and Dr. Oscar H. Allis. The music was rendered by a quartette from the Orpheus Club.
For over fifty years John Sparhawk had bee»i connected with the active business and religious life of Philadelphia.

He died at the age of seventy-one. He was born in Phil- adelphia, Nov. 9, 1818, on Chestnut street above Front. He was a grandson of Dr. John Sparhawk who, along with other representative Philadelphians, signed the fa- mous " Non-importation Articles" against Great Britain in 1761, a copy of which is framed and hung in Independ- | ence Hall, and which has been often regarded as the father of the Declaration of Independence. He was a descend- ant of Rev. John Sparhawk, one of the early Puritan pas- | tors of the historic First church of Salem, Mass.
He began his business life early and soon rose to be a partner in the old dry goods house of Atwood, White & Co., afterwards White & Sparhawk. Shortly after the war the firm, having lost heavily by reason of the failure of their southern trade to pay the obligations due the house, went out of mercantile business. He then estab- I lished a law and collection office at 400 Chestnut street, in which business he was engaged at the time of his decease.
Mr. Sparhawk was one of the organizers and charter members of the Young Men's Christian Association of Philadelphia. He was vice president of the Philadelphia Bible Society, of which he had been a manager for nearly forty years. During the war he spent a portion of every day in the hospitals ministering to the wounded, attend- ing to the burying of the dead and corresponding with the relatives of sick and dying soldiers. He was appointed by the governor slate inspector of hospitals, a position which he held without compensation until the close of the war.
In his religious life especially, however, he had shown unubual fervor. He was identified with the establishment of the first church mission enterprise in West Philadel- })hia and at Tabor. At the time of the great revival in 1857, he conducted religious services in Jayne's Hall,

Seventh and Chestnut streets, and from then up to the outbreak of the war, he conducted special services among the firemen at their engine houses. He was an active teacher in Sunday schools from 1832 up to within three months of his death. He was a devoted supporter of the Rev. Albert Barnes, of the old First Presbyterian Church, of Washington Square, Philadelphia, under whose min- istry his religious life was developed.
So catholic was his spirit, however, that up to within a short period of his death, he had occupied the position of superintendent of a Baptist Sunday school. He had also been very active as a visitor at the hospitals of the University of Pennsylvania. He conducted the famous litigation to restrain the running of the Sunday street cars, reported in the "Pennsylvania Supreme Court Re- ports" under the title of Sparhawk vs. the Union Passen- ger Railway.
He was one of the handful of old and well-known Phil- adelphia business men who have survived the early years of the century in the business life of this community. His faculties were unimpaired to the day of his death and he died unexpectedly after a short ilhiess in the midst of his business and religious usefulness. He was a man of singular purity of character and of spotless integrity.

Col. George Sparhawk died in Kittery, Maine, in No- vember, 1857, and left but one child surviving, his wife and the other two children having passed on before him. A beautiful sketch of his life may be found in the Memorial Biographies of " The New England Historic Genealogical Society," volume 3, pp. 195-199. We will not therefore attempt to delineate his life in this brief space.

Mrs. Sparhawk, a woman of wonderful beauty of char- acter, survived her husband more than a decade, dying in Newton Centre, Mass., where her daughters still live. Her husband was born Octol)er 30, 1806, in Portsmouth, N. H. He was a generous-hearted boy, sensitive to the suiferings, not of human beings alone, but of all creatures. He was observant rather than communicative, but was keenly appreciative of wit and quick in perceptions of the ridiculous. Of quick and retentive memory, an exact scholar, he showed early that clearness of judgment and freedom from prejudice that marked him in later life. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1828 and from there went to the Medical School at Harvard. He studied in the wards of the Massachusetts Hospital under the famous Dr. James Jackson. In after years this eminent physi-

cian showed his appreciation of his pupil's quick intuitions in regard to disease, his Iceenness of observation and re- search and that conscientiousness which made both his practice and his life a success in the highest sense of benefit to others. After finishing his medical studies Sparhawk expected to begin his studies in Boston or its neighbor- hood. And here the influence of his teacher, his friendship with young men of his profession, of whom the world has since heard much, would have given him advantages at the outset of his career and congenial companionship. But the illness of his father changed everything. Mr. Spar- hawk was ordered by Dr. Jackson to an inland climate, and the family went from Brookline to the little town of Conway, N. H., as they owned land there. Conway was not a resort in those days, it had not even expanded to suit the wants of summer visitors, and a greater change in the young man's prospects could hardly have taken place. But his duty and his wishes kept him with his father dur- ing the life of the latter.
While living in Conway he married Elizabeth Camp- bell of Duns, Scothuid. A few years after his marriage he went for a time to Kittery, Maine. He thought of re- maining there and entered into negotiations for the Spar- hawk mansion (built by Sir William Pepperrell, for his daughter, the wife of Colonel Sparhawk). But the owner changed his price too often and the negotiations came to nothing. Soon after this the doctor moved to Amesbury, Mass., where he lived from that time, the spring of 1845, until 1872. In December, 1872, he moved to Newbury- port a town a few miles from Amesbury, at the mouth of the Meriimac river. In the May of 1874 he died there. Of his four children two died early ; the oldest child, his only son, at six and his second daughter a few weeks be- fore at the age of two, and two daughters outlive him.

The active part of his professional life was passed at Amesbury. He was a very hard worker, anxious to do his whole duty ; his reward lay in this and not in fame or self-aggrandizement. Wherever it was a question of duty to be done he seemed to feel as if every part belonged to him ; but when it came to the rewards, he was full ot the spirit of Whittier's lines :
" What matter, I or they? Mine or another's clay? So the right word be said And life the sweeter made?"
But his application to his profession was too intense and his skill in it too great, not to have made him known much more widely than he himself dreamed of being. And so he lived here for nearly a generation a life of ideal un- selfishness and devotion to the poor and suffering. In the burying ground in Amesbury there stands a simple shaft of Scotch granite on which it is written that it was ''erected oy the people of Amesbury and Salisbuiy" (then practi- cally one town). On this shaft is the name of Thomas Sparhawk, his age and the date of his death, and follow- ing this, the tribute of his townspeople: "The beloved physician."
His father, Samuel Sparhawk, was born in October, 1779. He showed early the bent of his character, being inclined to seriousness and of studious habits while at the same time he enjoyed the gayety of others. He was as a boy thoughtful for others to a remarkable degree and to his mother always showed a chivalrous courtesy and ten- derness. When quite a young man he became cashier of the bank at Portsmouth, N. H. He held this position for a number of years, for while here he married Elizabeth McKinstry, and in Portsmouth his three children, Oliver, Thomas and Elizabeth, were born. W^hen the youngest 11

was an infant he went to live in Concord where a l)etter position in the bank there had been offered to him. He lived in Concord nearly a score of years and held his phice as a cashier until the failure of his health led him to re- sign it. While here he also filled for about fifteen years the office of Secretary of State of New Hampshire, a post not unlike that of Lieut. Governor in Massachusetts. He was for a number of years on the board of directors of the State's Prison. While holding this place there oc- curred one of those incidents that over many elaborate de- tails of life show the stuff" of which a man is made. He was sent for one day post haste to the prison. There he found the other directors with the warden sitting in the directors' room which opened out upon the yard where the prisoners in flagrant rebellion were brandishing in the way of weapons whatever tools they could lay hands up- on and threatening with death whoever should attack them. The door from the directors' room into the yard was care- fully bolted, and the pale-faced officers sat in a terror that gave them small opportunity for consultation. A calmness seemed to enter the room with Mr. Sparhawk. He made a few inquiries into the cause of the rebellion, and then walk- ing steadily up to the door, ordered the warden to open it. The remonstrances of the others only made him repeat the order. The heavy door was opened, and refastened behind him, for the sight of the men in a fierceness and fury that was savagery would have made stouter hearts than theirs quail. At the opening of the door they all paused involuntarily with curiosity and that appreciation of courage which touches even brutes. With steady eyes and unhesitating step the director walked into the midst of them. " Put down your weapons, every man of you, and oo straight to your cells." This command uttered with the evenness of a perfect fearlessness, carried with it

all the force of impregnable authority. The men listened, their weapons still raised and poised, looked at him, slowly lowered them, and the next moment the amazed watchers in the room saw a file of conquered men marching quietly to their cells. In the shortest possible time they were locked in there. The rebellion was at an end.
On leaving Concord Mr. Sparhawk again spent a win- ter in Portsmouth, and the following spring went to Brook- line, Mass. Here he lived until the doctor ordered him to be taken from the sea air. He then removed to Con- way, New Hampshire, where he owned a farm. And here in a few years he died leaving in many hearts the memory of a life remarkable in its purity of motive, its simplicity and strength.
644 Elizabeth Sparhawk, daughter of Hon. Sam- uel and Elizal)eth (McKinstr}^) Sparhawk, married Edward Winslow, Esq., son of Isaac and Margaret (Blanchard) Winslow, Sept. 25, 1847. (He was a grandson of the Isaac Winslow, whose first wife was Elizabeth Sparhawk.) He died in Newton Centre, Mass., in 1883 (May 26). After his decease his widow continued to reside in Newton Centre. Her last days were passed with her nieces in the same town (children of Dr. Thomas Sparhawk) where on April 21, 1891, she passed away. The following beautiful account of her life appeared in "The Transcript" of Boston and as it is most accurate and comprehensive, we quote it in full as follows :
"It is not often that the circle of the years unite, the vivacity of youth, the keen enjoyment of beauty in nature and the world, a zest in the simple things of daily life, with mature thought and a deep spir- itual life. But these gifts met in her. Her transition from gay to grave was like that from the sunshine to the shadows of a summer's day, alvs'ays with the consciousness of briglitness overhead. She was full of wit, and her unfailing sense of humor made her full of bright

and amusing anecdotes. Stories of old New England daj's and cus- toms were as fresh in lier mind as wlien she first knew them, Avhile any droll occurrence of to-day, or the ludicrous side of any scene, pre- sented itself to her invariably and was reproduced with a faithfulness that made it irresistible.
But it was not these traits that made her beloved and honored by those who knew her. Her clear and quick understanding, her loyalty to those whom she loved, her unswerving fidelity to whatever she be- lieved right — the sense of strength in her very presence — these were the foundations of the attractiveness, enhanced by gifts and graces and by the simplicity of perfect unconsciousness. No one knowing the attachment from childhood between herself and her husband's sister could hold the friendship of women a myth. In the long years they spent together, until the recent death of the latter, they read and studied many things, historic stories, biographies, travels and es- pecially those relating to Bible lands and connected with sacred history ; and a few years ago the two took up the study of Hebrew that they might read at least passages in the Bible in the original. Yet so full was she of the best of youth and brightness of spirit that a good child's book, even of fairy stories, always interested her.
She was born at Portsmouth, N. H., a descendant of the colonial family there and of John Sparhawk, the early minister of the old church of Salem, Mass. From him and from other ancestors no less earnest may have come the strength and fulness of her faith — as from a line of women of unusual energy and power in a time in this country when these qualities were not uncommon, there came her independence, her staying qualities, her unconsciousness of self, and that bright cheerfulness Avhich made the day seem sunnier, when she entered into it. And this sunshine was in her faith also ; wliatevcr came to her was sent ; her whole life in all its details Avas an illustration of the old hymn —
"What God doth it is all well done; His will upright abiding. Since He has traced my course begun, I will go on confiding." In her gayety was the charm not only of real wit, but of a light- heartedness Avith the deepest foundations ; and in her very presence there came to one a new revelation of the strength and beauty of faith — a wonder if, in this age of doubt, a trust so absolute did not have its rich reward even in the eyes of men. For strength and peace, courage and power, all were hers, all made life a blessing to others, and now make her memory a plea for living near to heaven."

Also "A Lazy Man's Work, "Little Polly Blatchley," "A Chronicle of Conquest" and other volumes. Miss Spar- hawk has also a deep interest in work among the Indians.

Colonel Cutts graduated from Harvard College in 1823, and studied law with Hon. Jeremiah Mason. After his removal to Vermont he practised his profession for many years.
During that time he was Judge of the Probate Court ; four years a member of the Vermont legislature ; three years senator, and until his death in 1875 was Vice Presi- dent, for Vermont, of the New Enghind Historical Gene- alogical Society. He delivered a good many addresses before various organizations, and contributed to the press.

He left an iin published novel in manuscript form entitled "Louisbourg," which as the title suggests had its origin in a study of that historic event. Mrs. Cutts survived her husband only four years, dying very suddenly in April, 1879. She had been a woman of remarkal)le energy, and uprightness of character as well as of warm and be- nevolent heart. At the time of the purchase of "Mount Vernon" by the ladies of the Union she was Vice Regent for Vermont, and labored for this patriotic cause with her characteristic zeal and enthusiasm. After the death of her father she wrote a volume entitled "The Life and Times of VVm. Jarvis," Riverside Press. An edition of one thousand copies was published of this work, and copies of it are to be seen in the principal historical libraries.

Mrs. M. D. Lowell died in 1890. Her husband, Rev. Rob't T. S. Lowell, was a graduate of Harvard in the class of 1833, and, after acquiring a medical education, be- came a clergyman in the Episcopal Church. He was es- tablished in 1846 and 1847 in Newfoundhmd. It was at that time he gathered the materials for his novel entitled "The New Priest of Conception Bay." This was issued in 1858, and again in 1863 was reissued, with illustrations by Darle3^ In 1860 he published a volume of poems en- titled "Fresh hearts that failed three thousand years ago." From 1869 to 1873 he was head master of St. Mark's School at Southboro, Mass. Afterwards he was Professor of Latin in Union College. These are his chief works and positions, although he did very much, and was very highly esteemed as a writer and teacher. His death oc- curred on the twelfth of September, 1891, a month after the death of his brother James Russell Lowell.

eminent man were yjoih singularly fitted for his compan- ions. Indeed his first wife was gifted as a writer of beau- tiful poems. Her husband graduated from Harvard in 1838, and his whole life in detail has become so much the property of the world at large that it is unnecessary to add anything to what has been written. His poems and prose works will live in the memory of all who read them ; few are born to fill such eminent positions. Statesman, diplomat, litterateur, poet, essayist, critic and professor ! Capt. Edward H. Cutts, born in Portsmouth, N. H., was educated at Thetford, Vt., and at the Military Col- lege at Norwich, Vt. He afterward prosecuted his math- ematical studies with a civil engineer, and was fitted for that profession. He was one of the oldest pioneers in the state of Minnesota witness ino- the s^rowth of Faribault (his western home) from a small settlement to a large city. He passed away on Oct. 11, 1887, in that city, and was at the time of his death a vice-president of the Old Settlers Association of Rice County. ^

He published many original poems and sto- ries which were written in a clear, strong style, and won many commendations. His earthly career was termina- ted on the 3rd of Jan., 1890. The address at his funeral services, delivered by Rev. R. S. Storrs, D.D., formed one of the impressive parts of the occasion. Since the commencement of this genealogy many addi- tional facts have been received which have made it much larger than originally expected while by no means mak- ing it as complete as most family records. As the at- tempt was only to gather such records as were to be had without a prolonged research it will at once be seen that the purpose of the C()mi)iler has ])een fully met. It is proper to note that Mr. Henry Fitz Gilbert Waters has discovered recently that the first wife of Nathaniel Spar- hawk, the emigrant, was Mary Ainger, of Dedham, Essex Co., England.

I.
I see him on his rounds
Within the village bounds,
His patient horse at every humble door
Where crammed in stifling dens,
Tiie foul, dark factory pens.
Lie, loathed by dainty sense, the suffering poor.
II.
Not loathed by that pure love,
Warm from the light above
Hastening to spend for them his heavenly gift ;
Like one who closely trod
The foot-prints of his God —
Body and soul alike, from death to lift.
III. I see him gently raise, The infant, frail of days, In manly arms, asjtender as his heart ; I see the mother laid On soft couch, freshly made By hands well used to act a woman's part.
IV.
I see the aged soothed
The young head softly smoothed ;
The horny hand grasped brotherly and warm ;
I see the loved home hearth,
The hospitable mirth
Left night by night, to breast the wintry storm.
V.
Far over hill and plain,
Through darkness, mist and rain,
Through biting cold and clouds of drifting suoav
Oft for no other mead
Than His who sent the need
Faithful and fearless still, I see him go.

I see the reverent throng.
The aged and the young,
The rich, the poor, Avho press around his bier;
I mark the heaving breast,
The low sob half suppressed,
The manly grief, and woman's tender tear.
IX.
And with the eye of faith.
His trust in that which saith
"Come, blessed of my Father, who have given
Food to my hungering poor,
Health to my sick and sore"
I see a king within the courts of heaven.

I see the crown of light !
I know his garment bright !
I touch his golden sceptre of command ;
But whence yon garland green,
With leaves of silvery sheen
And fragrant breath, that blooms within his hand?
